Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS) is an IT services, business solutions and outsourcing organization. TCS offers a consulting-led, integrated portfolio of IT and IT-enabled services delivered through its unique Global Network Delivery ModelTM. With over 160,000 consultants based at 141 offices across 98 locations in 42 countries, TCS reported revenues of USD 6.34 billion in 2009-10.

TCS set up the Technical Communication (TechCom) group in the early-70s, as part of its own pioneering vision of Delivery Quality for Indian IT. TechCom’s envisioned role was to go well beyond traditional product documentation. Accordingly, its role has been expansively Value-adding, permeating all business and operational units in the organisation. Today, by a global enterprise survey, TechCom ranks within the Top 3 positions amongst 17 corporate functions such as Quality Assurance, Corporate Marketing and Communications, HR, Finance and Administration. TechCom has held this top position for several years.

TechCom essentially plays a vocational, capability-enabling, defect-preventive role in TCS by establishing documentation standards, processes and assets. This is complemented by training, technical writing, reviews and editing that cover several types of documentation in varied solution domains. It also offers niche services such as documentation project management, WBT, web content development, visual design, usability analysis and design and DITA-based information ecosystem solutions. All these services have been availed by a wide range of clients including Global Fortune 500 companies. TechCom’s expertise and niche offerings have also helped TCS win large and strategic customers.

Drawing from its three decades of international experience in varied projects and roles, TechCom has developed patent-filed innovations for development of high quality information with less effort and in less time. These have been recognized as best practices within TCS and the Tata group.

TechCom’s expansive role has thus come to acquire a stature on par with software development and quality assurance.
