STC Career Day, 28 July 2007, Bangalore

The well-publicized STC India Career Day @ Bangalore started off at Hotel Gateway on Saturday, 28 July 07 with the lighting of the lamp by the Admin Council and Anuradha C, who organized the event.

The audience was a nice mixture of people who were already into technical writing, and newcomers who wanted to get into the field. They had many relevant questions to ask and kept the session alive.

The first session by Vasudha Rangarajan gave useful pointers to newbies and those who wish to shift jobs on how to write that perfect resume.

During the break, people went around the many well-equipped stalls and spoke to volunteers. There were stalls by BEA Systems, Oracle, Synopsys, Triumph, Aquent, RSA, Magma Design Automation, Juniper, Symantec, and Symbian.

Anupama Pundpal, STC Membership Manager, then spoke about STC, the huge growth it has witnessed over years, starting from a time when people hardly knew what technical writing was about. She also elaborated on the benefits of joining STC, and invited more memberships.

Next was a very informative panel discussion with Susan Alexander, Manjula Khandula and Gururaj B.S. While Susan spoke about what to look out for when you decide to start a technical writing institute on your own, Manjula spoke about what it takes to be a good manager.  Gururaj covered the technical career path and its pros and cons. This session was moderated by Anupama A.

Sandhya Prasad, Director Information Management, BEA Systems next presented the results of the STC Salary Survey. The survey spoke of rising salaries across all cities in India, and new cities coming into the fray. It also highlighted the lessening of the margin between US and Indian technical writer salaries.

Post-lunch, the various companies that had set up stalls presented their companies and job openings to the audience.

Sponsoring companies held contests at their stalls and prizes were distributed after the break. Anuradha C, the STC India Employment Manager for 2007, gave the vote of thanks.

The whole event was expertly and humorously compered by Preran Kurnool.
