Pune – October 5

A training program on maintaining quality in technical communication and the effective use of the audio-visual media was conducted at the VERITAS Software office in Pune. Both sessions received encouraging response from the audience, and the number of participants grew substantially over that of past events.

Suvarna Inamdar conducted the first session. Her presentation .Quality in Technical Communication. began with the definition of quality, and why it is important in the software industry. She discussed how quality is implemented in various companies.

Suvarna's presentation included a summary of a study conducted in the US, and how it influences the best approach to quality. The session was interactive, with participants discussing the various quality standards and procedures (including ISO) being followed in their companies, and the role technical communicators play.

After a short break, Sunil Gokhale took over and kept the participants enthralled with his engrossing presentation about audio-visual media. Sunil has notched substantial accomplishments in this field, both commercial and educational.

Sunil broadened the participants' perspective in multiple career options relating to technical communication that involve use of effective audio-visual instructions.

He illustrated practical examples of how television soaps could regain audience's attention for 30 minutes even though they may contain only a few spoken lines of dialogue. It is the effect created by the script, Sunil reiterates, that communicates lot more than a million words.

Hyderabad – October 18

An information sharing session titled 'Knowing who we are, and what we do - discussions on some scenarios that technical communicators are often faced with and how to handle them?'  was held at Hyderabad.

Susan Alexender explained the basic challenges affronting technical communicators, including the expectations from internal customers (management and cross functional team) and external customers.

Susan conducted the session by sharing practical scenarios from work place and involved all participants to share their opinion on how to handle the described situation. 18 technical communicators had participated in this session and each found the session to be valuable.

Mumbai – October 26

A learning session was organized at the i-flex solutions office in Mumbai. Two speakers, Vishakhadutt Patil and K. Narsimhan spoke on minimalism and types of end user documentation, respectively.

The session began with Mr. Patil explaining the concept of "Less is More", which is the minimalist approach. Mr. Narsimhan in turn, advocating that "More is better", discussed how more fits in while writing various end user documents. Both speakers were lucidly explained their respective concepts, and presented numerous examples and real life scenarios that ensured two-way participation in the group.

The highlight of the session was perhaps a spontaneous, open discussion on licensing issues. The question that came up was "Who holds the license to any software? Is it the company or the project?" Some of the 25 plus participants were newbies to technical writing, and on their requests the seniors explained the application of various software used for documentation and effective presentation of information.
