Learning Sessions

19th June 2004, Mumbai

Patni Computer Systems Limited hosted an STC learning session in Mumbai on 19th June 2004. Vikram Bhalchandra, Senior Manager from Patni and Narssimhan from Commit presented the topics: Leveraging the Web for brand building in IT Services and Zen and the Art of Technical Writing, respectively.

The first session on "Leveraging the Web for brand building in IT Services" focused on the powerful media tool, the Web. He explained how to use the global brand scoreboard and how this tool can be leveraged effectively for brand building globally. This session also discussed the strategies and tactics that companies are using in India and around the globe for effective brand building over the Internet. Vikram introduced to the 9 commandments of the Web Marketing: Quality, Use web, Compensate the Consumer, Selfservice driven media, Information, Value based currencies, Brand names, Small can compete, and Agility rules.

The post-tea break session by Mr. Narssimhan described the beautiful basic concepts of Zen that lead to good (technical) writing. He drove the audience through Zen's masters' unscathed approach towards facing the challenges of technical writing with a lot of practical examples. He also stressed that writers should not think too much about the act of writing, but should let the words flow naturally - Nirvana state of writing.

The whole presentation was based on the theme, "Just Write Here Now." Narasimhan said that while writing, writers should use each paragraph, sentence, word, letter, punctuation, with total concentration.

STC conducted a learning session in Hewlett-Packard on the topics, "Managing a Documentation Practice: Becoming a Profit Center" and "Stylistics: what is 'style' and how does one define
house-style?"

The challenge for most documentation teams is to gain organization attention and respect. The challenge is to grow from being a support team to becoming mainstream. Sairaj Vaithilingam's presentation explained how the Documentation Team that he manages at Cognizant has become a mainstream "profit making" group. In addition, his presentation also covered the best practices in managing a documentation team in terms of managing business, delivery, resources, and skills.

This session by Gururaj B.S. and Shankar Rajanala was intended for technical writers and editors who need to know more about style and its variations. Style is defined, with regard to language, as 'a distinctive manner of expression (as in writing or speech)' and in particular as 'a convention with respect to spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and typographic arrangement and display followed in writing or printing.' The focus of the presentation was on styles, which are consciously defined and adhered to. The presentation explained the why and how of defining and adhering to the house-style.

Hewlett-Packard provided the venue and logistics. Citec India sponsored lunch at the event.
