She thanks a relative who told her that CITIL, now known as iFlex, was holding a test for technical writers. Viji didn’t know an iota about technical writing but thought she had technical acumen, is a fast learner and likes doing different projects, which should serve her good. The fact that end deliverables would be articles in English was only an advantage. With these thoughts, Viji appeared for the interview and was selected. After CITIL and DSI which created banking software, Viji worked with companies creating supply chain management solutions and digital rights management solutions. She created online help, user guides and different instructional aids for users. Through each project and with every change, Viji learned to balance creativity with organizational standards and requirements. Currently, Viji works as the Group Manager of the User Education department at Talisma, which is in the CLM (Customer Lifecycle Management) space. Her group focuses on creating end-user documentation, SDK documentation, and tutorials for the product. It has been over 9 years for Viji working as technical communicator and she still derives as much fun and satisfaction as she had when she started her career. Though many technical writers feel that they are not fully supported in their roles, Viji believes that these days programmers and management are realizing the importance of technical communication and the growing challenges within. Occasionally though, Viji still encounters a programmer asking "you don't have to do anything; just copy this list, paste it, and format it". To this brilliant suggestion, Viji’s response is “we add value by learning what you people implement and putting it across in minimum words in the simplest, most unambiguous manner so that any user can quickly and productively use the solution”. Regarding STC Viji believes that besides publishing quality journals and helping communicators remain abreast with the latest in their profession, STC particularly helps in networking with the ablest brains in the trade. This helps in continual learning and problem solving. Viji thoroughly enjoys her profession and relishes meeting outstanding people creating wonderful products. Viji is fortunate to be supported by an understanding husband who supports all her career decisions. While Viji would wish to spend more time with her children, she is blessed with children who understand the long hours their Mom has to put in at the office. Anupama A is now a senior member of STC. According to the STC Bylaws, the grade of senior member is conferred upon those who have held the grade of member in STC for five years.
