Yet Another Feather in the CapIt
has always been the endeavor of the STC India chapter to bring loads of
benefits to the growing technical writing community in India. The chapter
is achieving more and more success this year. A well-received first-ever
Regional Conference recently took place in Bangalore. Monthly learning
sessions are now being conducted in Trivandrum and Kolkatta. In
addition to creating networking and learning opportunities for the Indian
technical writing community, STC India Chapter wanted to do more, for
instance, bringing the industry and job-seekers together. The first-ever
STC Employment Fair, a very rewarding event and one of the best STC events
of this year, took place in Bangalore on July 2, 2005. The industry is in
dire need of qualified and competent technical writers. We do have a
multitude of job seekers, but a majority of them do not meet the industry
expectations. An event to create awareness among job seekers was required.
Employment Fair 2005 was the answer to the problem. The IT industry has
always been supporting STC India chapter activities. It was time to
reciprocate. Employment Fair 2005 was an attempt to enable job seekers to
understand the requirements of the industry. It
is heartening to measure the success of the Employment Fair by numbers.
The event was sponsored by six major corporates of Bangalore, and across
them, they advertised 80 job requirements. A total of 125 resumes were
collected from job-seekers. A panel discussion about the
recently-published STC India Salary Survey results was the icing on the
cake for the 150-strong audience of technical communicators. The panel had
a good mix of senior Human Resources professionals and technical
documentation managers from the industry. At
the end of it, the sponsors, Oracle, SAP Labs, Infosys, BEA Systems and
Symphony Services, were extremely happy with the responses that they
received and the resumes that they collected. A student from TechnoPoint
reflects the sentiment of the job-seekers, “I got to meet with many job
advertisers. I had a first round of interview too.” STC
India chapter’s Employment Fair could not have been this successful, if
not for the sponsoring and participating organizations, salary survey
discussion panelists, and volunteers who supported this event. The STC
Admin Council thanks all of them and wishes all the Indian technical
communicators a bright future in the years ahead. STC
India Employment Fair garnered the attention of national and local press
in a big way, much before we bring this editorial to you. For a detailed
report about the STC Employment Fair 2005, stay tuned for the next issue
of Indus. Subash Babu and D. Vijayalakshmi
