Become a Mentor

Mentor is a powerful word. It dates back to Greek mythology. We have
heard about the father-like relationship between Telemachus and
Mentor.

I'm pleased to announce that the India chapter of STC is entering into
an inter-chapter mentoring relationship with the STC Boston chapter. I
had email interaction and telephonic discussions with the president of the
Boston chapter. The key objectives of this mentoring program are to:

  • foster STC's international growth by supporting the Indian technical
writing community as it establishes itself.
  • contribute to advancing the state of the art of technical
communication by sharing expertise on advanced topics, such as
    single-sourcing, internationalization, etc.
  • stimulate the STC-Boston and India chapters' leadership to closely
examine their current practices as part of the process of sharing best
practices and information between the two chapters.
  • document a case study of an international mentoring relationship.

STC India chapter is also embarking on a mentoring program
for the Indian technical writing community. I've requested Vasudha
Rangarajan, a member of our chapter, to lead this initiative. Vasudha
is closely working with Venkat Iyer, the education manager of our
chapter, to launch the first-ever mentoring program in a month or two.
We have put together a strategic plan, and we will invite applications
from aspiring technical writers. I'd like to thank Vasudha, Melanie,
and Venkat for their leadership and support. I am sure the mentoring
program will add tremendous value to the efforts of our chapter
leaders and volunteers in building a strong forum for technical
writers.

I take this opportunity to congratulate Tharun Unni and Frederick
Menezes on winning the Distinguished Chapter Service Awards (DCSA).
Tharun and Fredo have contributed to the technical writing community
in India over a long period of time.

We have submitted our nominations for the STC community achievement
awards (CAA). I'd like to thank Makarand and Susan for their assistance in
that effort. We're now eagerly waiting for feedback from the CAA evaluation committee.

Also, we are working on a new initiative to enhance the STC India portal, for which an external vendor will be contracted. We're going to put an open source content management system (CMS) in place. The key purpose of this project is to reduce maintenance overheads and costs. The portal gives us a new identity on the Web. We want to make our Web site as interactive as possible. We're now looking for corporate sponsors.

The exact terms and conditions of the agreement between the sponsoring organization and the STC India chapter are ready. If your company is interested in supporting this initiative, please write me an email at gururaj.bs@gmail.com.

Anupama A from Pivotal, a senior member of our chapter, will be the
2006 annual conference program manager. She is an experienced
volunteer of our chapter. The conference program management
is a big responsibility. I am confident that Anu will do a great job
this year. As you may know, the 2006 annual conference will be held in
Bangalore.

In a couple of months, a few leading lights in our industry will be
visiting some colleges to introduce technical writing to students and
promote it as a career option. Anjana Sriram, the secretary of our chapter, will coordinate this 'evangelical' initiative with our city representatives. You will hear more from us shortly. I'm quite excited about the initiatives and programs we are coordinating this year. Chennai and Hyderabad have new city representatives. Kiranmayee is the Chennai city rep, while Roshini Krishnamurthy is the Hyderabad rep. They have already started organizing sessions and events. On behalf of the admin council, I'd like wish Kiranmayee and Roshini all the very best.

INDUS is now managed by Sankara Rajanala and Tharun Unni. I'd like to
thank Vijayalakshmi and Subash Babu for their wonderful contribution
to INDUS last year.

Your suggestions are important to us. Please write back to us.
