Huge Variations in Technical Communicator Salaries in India

STC India’s 2003 technical communicator salary survey indicates that the median salary for technical communication professionals in India is Rs 3,10,000 per annum or Rs 25,833 per month. The survey also suggests that 10 percent of the technical communication community earns upward of Rs 58,333 per month.

Technical communicators covered by this survey included mostly technical writers, editors, and instructional designers working in the IT industry.

The median salary for technical communicators with less than 2 years of experience is Rs 17,958 per month. The median figure for those with 2-3 years of experience is slightly higher at Rs 18,000. The 3-4 years of experience group earns a median salary of Rs 25,000. The figure goes up to Rs 33,333 for the 4-7 years experience group. The median figure for those with more than 7 years of experience is Rs 58,333 per month.

The survey also brings out the huge variations in the salary ranges for any given grouping.

For instance, the median salary for the lower 10 percent of technical communicators with 4-7 years of experience is Rs 21,417 per month; whereas, the figure for the top 10 percent in this grouping is more than double at Rs 50,858.

Likewise, there are significant variations in the salary figures based on locations. For Bangalore, which accounts for the largest number of technical communicators in India, the median figure is Rs 29,167 per month. The figure is Rs 22,083 for Chennai and Rs 26,042 for Delhi. The figure is higher for Hyderabad at 33,333 whereas it is Rs 25,000 for Mumbai. Pune tops the chart at Rs 39,375.

See the salary table for detailed figures emerging from the survey.

Survey Methodology

Data for the survey was gathered in two phases. First, questionnaires were
handed out to about 240 technical communicators at the STC India Annual Conference in Bangalore in December 2002. Each participant had to indicate the experience, age, gender, educational level, salary, city, and so on.

Of the about 240 questionnaires distributed at the conference, 82 were completed and returned.

Next, the questionnaire was put up on the STC India Web site and technical communicators were invited to submit their inputs online. 149 persons answered the questionnaire online. Of these responses, about 20 were discounted because of doubtful inputs.

The survey results are based on the collective inputs of 211 technical communicators.

Of the 211 respondents, 122 were females and 89 were males. 24 respondents had 0-2 years of experience, 50 had 2-3 years of experience, 45 had 3-4 years of experience, 58 had 4-7 years of experience, 22 had 7-10 years of experience, and 11 had more than 10 years of experience.
