The Welch Way

Mused by Kalpana Ranganathan

This little handbook written by Jeffery Krames imparts the wisdom of Jack Welch, the CEO of General electric and the Guru of modern-day leadership.

If you hadn't heard about Welch's model for leadership earlier, then this is a good book to start with.

Each leadership lesson has been explained as an action, followed by Jack's philosophy on it. If you have ever wondered how our organizations evolved from "Sirs" to the first name informality; if you have ever been amazed at the simplicity of the term "leader" over a "manager", if you have ever smiled at the convenience of the flexible working hours; if you have ever enjoyed been a part of your company's innovation policy; if you have ever appreciated the quality process of Six Sigma, then through this book you would know the mentor behind making the work-place as a home away from home .

Face Reality, Defy Tradition, Overcome bureaucracy, Mode beyond boundaries, Fight fear... are some of the best ones of Jack's leadership wisdom, which many of the modern-day leaders are putting to practice. This little handbook covers most of these lessons in a short and simple manner, making it easy to understand the leader's message.

However, the author could have quoted small anecdotes from Welch's experience at GE and could have made the book more alive than just being a quick reference guide. This could have made the reading enjoyable and not just as a task to improve one's leadership capabilities. And at times you get a feeling that you have read this somewhere before. The author could have avoided repetitions.

Yet to all those, including me, who are ignorant of the leader and his revolutionary lessons, this book can serve as a good introduction to Jack Welch and pave the way for getting to know more about Welch and the road he took to become one of the most successful leader in the recent times.
