Grammar for Grownups

By Gaurav Gera

The principal objective of Grammar for Grownups by Janis Fisher Chan and Diane Lutovich is to help us write clearly and correctly. This book is a refresher for all those forgotten grammar and punctuation rules and principles of good writing that we passed by in our rush to grow up.

The book unfolds with Check Yourself, an introduction to the book. Each subsequent unit has something specific to offer with its Try it Yourself and Practices exercises that help us understand, remember, and more importantly, put what we have learnt to use.

The Unit Review section at the end of each unit summarizes and ensures that we understand the points covered in that unit.

Check Yourself presents an easy way to identify our strengths and weaknesses in writing. This helps you identify which of the subsequent sections will help you most.

Terms defines the terms used to discuss the mechanics of writing—parts of speech and parts of a sentence. Successive units refer to these terms in the course of their discussion, and in the form of numerous hints, notes, cautions and optional exercises on the correct usage of pronouns, verbs, and articles.

Consider The Sentence shows how to write complete and correct sentences. Using Correct Punctuation helps understand the correct use of punctuation, exclusively dealing with commas, apostrophes, semicolons, colons, dashes, and parentheses. The authors also suggest ways to apply all that we learn to our own writing by including a section called On Your Own in some units.

Clarifying Confusing Words helps improve our ability to use the correct word by identifying easily confusable words, and pointing out the right word to be used in a specific context.

The narrative is presented in a smooth flow of ideas that makes it easy to read, and is a welcome departure from strident readers on English grammar and punctuation. The authors have not covered every issue that business and professional writers find troublesome, but have dealt in detail with common writing traps one encounters frequently.

As the authors believe that no single book can provide all the information needed to learn, understand, and correct our awareness of grammar and punctuation, references in the Bibliography are extensive.

Janis Fisher Chan and Diane Lutovich have helped demystify one of the most widely misunderstood of all languages - English. I recommend that this book be renamed Grammar for All.
