Clash of the Titans

– Participate! It’s your right! Win! It’s your worth!

By Sunil Gokhale

The STC India Chapter organizes competitions for the categories of Online Communications, Technical Art, and Technical Publications. STC India Chapter recognizes quality technical communication with awards of Merit, Excellence, and Distinguished in each competition category.

This was the second year of the competition. The advertisement campaign for the competitions evoked enquiries aplenty. While not all enquiries culminated in entries, technical communicators were educated on the rules of the competitions – to be better prepared for the competitions next year. Indeed, to be forewarned is to be forearmed.

The Rules

The rules of the competition were simple. You didn’t need to be an STC member to enter the competition.

You could submit an entry as an individual contributor, or on behalf of a colleague or subordinate. The entries submitted for the competition needed to be produced or substantially revised within 24 months before September 1 2003. Entries had to be suitable for public display. Entries that contained classified or proprietary information or those that violated copyright laws were not acceptable.

The deadline for submission of these entries this year - September 5 - was extended by a further 10 days. Eventually, entries sent in after September 15 were also accepted to encourage more participation. Allowances were made for entries that came in late, quoting reasons such as clearance from counterparts located abroad. All valid reasons were considered. A total of 25 entries were received; nine in the Technical Publications category, ten entries in the Online Communication category and six entries in the Technical Art category.

Although the judges were from varied backgrounds, they were unanimous in their choice of award winners. Ganesh Natarajan, CEO, Zensar Technologies, handed over the awards at the STC, India Chapter Annual Conference in Pune on December 12-13, 2003.
