1:40- 2:20 pm–  What’s wrong with your Calling Card?

Abstract: This session discusses how technical writers in India are ‘single-handedly’ (sic) ruining their chances of being called for an interview. We discuss everything that’s found on your calling card (resume), from mildly nonsensical to stuff that will make you cringe. And of course, most things in between. We’ll also look at what’s generally missing on resumes.

And if you were wondering about the icing, well that’s there too. After attending the session, some of you will be eligible for a free analysis of your resume.
Warning: Not for the faint hearted or the easily offended!

Speaker profile: With nearly 20 years of fun at work in product companies, Nibu believes that one of his biggest contributions to the technical writing industry is in keeping the TW gene pool clean;) He currently works as Manager – Information Development in GT Nexus, an Infor company. He has lost some hair in the process of screening thousands of resumes, but thankfully, will always be proud of every hire he’s made in his career. This is unlikely to change, as long as gun control laws remain the same! He’s pretty good with words, so it’s probably his wacky sense of humor that gets him in trouble – sometimes. His latest article on creative JDs (first published in Indus – an STC India Publication) got quite some attention. Nibu is also one of the editors of Udaan(http://udaanstc.github.io/GutsAndGlory/index.html), an ‘experience’ published for the STC India Conference in 2015.

2:25-3:00 pmTechnical Writers and Internet of Things (IoT)

Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of inter-connected ‘things’ that communicate over a network. Things can be devices or people. The communication can be between people-people, people-device, or even device-device. IoT helps collect and share data over a connected network. IoT is one of the platforms of today’s Smart City, and Smart Energy Management Systems. There are a lot of interesting things IoT can do: send a message on your behalf when you are late for a meeting, turn on the lights when you reach home, and turn off Wi-Fi when leaving home. The presentation will also highlight the future of IoT along with certain limitations. Also, as technical writers, what role can we play in the IoT space.

Speaker profile: Saral Gupta is a Lead Information Developer currently employed at Micro Focus (formally Novell Software Pvt Ltd). With around 9 years of experience in technical documentation, Saral has had a progressive career. His experience includes authoring on various domains and technologies. He enjoys exploring new gadgets in free time and is never afraid to try something new. Currently, he is busy analysing how to shoot a 360 degree video. He rides a Royal Enfield and makes sure he finds new roads every weekend.
