SOCIETY FOR TECHNICAL COMMUNICATION

How has STC helped me?

Susan Alexander, www.write-concept.com/
I've been an STC member since 1999 and have always looked at membership as a "must-have" for professional development.  My experience as Education Manager, Secretary, President, and Immediate Past President of the India chapter presented me with great learning opportunities. They helped me develop skills and perspectives that I now use when running my own business. On the personal front, I've made several good friends in the technical communication  community because we've worked together on various STC India chapter initiatives. A network of knowledgeable professionals really helps when you need to evaluate ideas or solve specific problems.
Gururaj B.S., Information Manager, BEA Systems, Bangalore
Owner of Technical Writers of India (TWIN - www.twin-india.org).
STC has been a guiding light in my professional life as a technical communicator. I'm constantly amazed by the proliferation of the technical communication industry in India, and STC's innumerable sources of information have tremendously helped me in adapting to the changing needs of this industry, which is growing at a breakneck speed. In the absence of full-fledged academic programs in technical communication, STC provides a great platform for technical communicators to share useful information, tips, and knowledge with my peers in the industry. STC's paperback journals and publications,
such as Intercom and Technical Communicatioin, help me keep pace with the emerging trends in the global market. Last but not the least, STC has provided me with opportunities to enhance my leadership skills.
Tharun Kumar Unni, Documentation Manager, FaceTime Communications
To me, STC is a platform for learning about technical communication. I have acquired a lot of knowledge from the annual conferences and monthly learning sessions organized by the India Chapter. My involvement as the Secretary, VP, and President of the chapter helped me immensely in developing leadership skills. STC has also given me a network of highly skilled contacts who readily offer help when I am in need of any assistance.
Saravanan Manoharan, Technical Writer, Mtree Software Pvt Ltd
"STC India was a major turning point in my Technical Writing career. I got the opportunity to sharpen my Technical Writing skills by attending various events such as Learning Sessions, full-day Regional Conferences and enlivening Annual Conferences. Networking is the basic mantra during these sessions and it helped me understand the Technical Writing community across the globe. STC India provided me wonderful opportunities not only to participate but also to present in these events and develop my interpersonal skills. Whenever I felt my career stagnating, STC India was always there, helping me to keep abreast with the latest developments and happenings in the Technical Writing community across the world."
Pawan Nayar, Senior Documentation Manager, Adobe Systems
I have been associated with STC India for eight years now. In these eight beautiful years, I have got to volunteer for a variety of activities including editing the award-winning newsletter INDUS, growing STC India memberships, organizing city and national level conferences, participating in STC competitions, serving as a jury for various competitions and conferences, presenting scores of papers in various learning sessions and writing for InterCom. In all these varied activities, I got chance to express myself, network with the finest peers in the industry, befriend folks with passion and creativity, learn tomorrow’s skills that would better serve my career, find future employees for my employer(s) and just have a ball. My association with STC is now an inseparable part of my personal and professional life, a beautiful and satisfying experience that continues to increase in intensity and rewards (both explicit and implicit) every year. This association furthers a common shared dream and that is to take the frontiers of communication to the next level.
Michelle Cherian, Specialist Information Developer, BEA Systems
STC is the only formal forum available for technical communicators to interact in India. Over the last few years I have been an active member of the India Chapter, as the Treasurer for 2005 and 2006, and the Vice President for 2007 and 2008 of the India Chapter. STC has helped me network with people from not just the technical writing community, but also professors from educational institutions and universities, and hiring and software development managers. I have had the opportunity to work with my team members who are also STC members to create a brand image for my team and company, and with fellow technical communicators to spread the awareness in educational institutions and universities in India about technical communication as a profession and the value of being a member of STC. I have also met and worked with experienced technical communicators from all over the world for several STC activities conducted in India. STCs various knowledge sharing programs such as monthly learning sessions, regional conferences, career day, and annual conferences have enhanced my program management skills as well as kept me abreast of the current trends in the industry.
Makarand Pandit, MD, Technowrites (www.technowrites.com)
STC has helped me network with other professionals. To some extent they have become my colleagues. This network helped me to generate business.
The India chapter helped me develop my skills. Especially my managerial skills because I worked as a volunteer. The publications helped me to develop professionally. Some of my articles were also published. So people could read my thoughts and respond.
