About the Speakers

Thara stepped into the Technical Writing profession in 2004 when she joined HTC Global Services. She has close to 9 years of experience. She is currently working with Mphasis as a Lead Infrastructure Analyst for the product ITO Tower. Her core responsibilities include reviewing high level design documents.

Her team in Mphasis was formed in 2004 and there was no process for documentation then. She together with her onsite coordinator defined the process and conducted sessions for engineers educating them on the new process. They have now successfully set up a streamlined process for reviewing documents. This process ensures that work goes on smoothly and effectively. In recognition of this effort, Thara received the Best Employee award in December 2008. Apart from her core work, she also enjoys contributing articles to the in-house Newsletter.

Outside of work, Thara spends time in community service. She successfully formed a team of volunteers for this purpose in January 2008. Today, the team conducts a community service activity every month by visiting orphanages, serving them food, providing them with monthly provisions, clothes, toys, etc. In addition, the team sponsors poor students for their entire year’s education.

Kabila is associated with HCL for four years now and has over eight years of experience in the IT industry. She started her career as a patent documentation specialist. Then, she underwent a certification course on technical writing to begin her career.

Session Abstract

Effective Reviews – Process, Types, and Tips – Thara

“We remember what we understand; we understand only what we pay attention to; we pay attention to what we want.” – Edward Bolles

If we have to grab the attention of our readers and ensure they understand the document and get the information they are looking for, it is important our documents are reviewed. Review is a vital and integral part of the Document Development Life Cycle (DDLC).

Review is a process of evaluation that focuses on the functional elements of a document, that is, what the document is supposed to ‘convey’. Documents are reviewed to enhance their quality and add value. To create high quality documents in the most efficient manner, reviews must take place at various stages of DDLC.

When we author documents, we do not get them right the first time around. They must be written, rewritten, tweaked, and edited to deliver a quality document.

This presentation will provide information on reviews, review process, types of reviews, and tips on effectively reviewing documents.

Introduction to Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) – Kabila

The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) is an XML-based, end-to-end architecture for authoring, producing, and delivering technical information. This architecture consists of a set of design principles for creating “information-typed” modules at a topic level and for using that content in delivery modes such as online help and product support portals on the Web. Adoption of DITA has increased dramatically in the past several years, as global businesses are achieving as much as 30-50% savings in content production and translation costs.

The presentation includes details on What is DITA, the Advantages of XML-based authoring, and How to reuse the content.
